FLAP (Flexible Light and Power)
This is a great idea—here are a couple of links to learn more.
Essentially someone came up with a very cheap way to get power to people in remote locations—FLAP is a messenger bag with a couple of solar cells on it that collect power for a light that is built into the bag, and the bag also has a USB port so you can charge a cell phone and or other small electronics.
The concept is about empowering people that live in remote areas and the bags are sold in groups to charitable Americans and then sent on to places in Africa, South America—I’m sure right now Haiti could use some of these.
There is a link to the order form—the price is somehow based on the purchasing organization’s ability to pay.

These are a great idea but why do they seem unavailable for sale to individuals? The PDF link seems to be down right now but it does say that a minimum quantity applies so I assume they are only selling them to organizations. This has happened before when people are worried that these needed items will be bought up for trendy gadget items by greedy westerners but what better way to ensure a readily available supply of cheap gadgets for the third world than to make something that is both useful and trendy? I'd certainly buy one for all of my gadgets!
ReplyDeleteYou see it a lot that this type of thing is only available for bulk purchase to philanthropic groups. I guess they don't want to dedicate staff to waiting on you to order, and have to sell them one at a time
